Anxiety Attack Medication Is Not Without Side Effects
If you suffer from anxiety attacks, chances are good that you will consider taking an anxiety attack medication at some point. After all, they're much more common that they used to be and they can provide immediate relief. However, there are some side effects associated with these types of drugs that you should be aware of.
Tricyclic anti depressants are commonly prescribed for anxiety attacks and have proven to be effective for treating depression. When depression and anxiety occur simultaneously they have also been shown to work well. Unwanted side effects can include dry mouth, blurred vision and difficulty with urination.
Newer medications including the brand Prozac are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Introduced during the 1980's, this type of anti-depressant helps the brain to maintain desired levels of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter.
Why Serotonin Levels Are Important
Regulating serotonin levels is important because people who suffer from depression usually have insufficient amounts of it. By taking anxiety attack medications such as Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft they can help correct the levels of serotonin and find relief from both depression and anxiety.
Benzodiazepines are yet another type of medication for anxiety attacks. They have been effective in relieving anxiety attack symptoms and are normally taken in a single dose or several times during the day for extended periods. As with most medications, they are not without side effects such as drowsiness and decreased mental alertness.
Beta blockers are recommended by some doctors to control the physical symptoms of anxiety. They have proven effective for treating social anxiety in particular. A rapid heart beat, shaking and trembling symptoms are often put at ease with this type of drug. Side effects tend to be minimal but can include light headedness, memory loss and a slower heart rate.
Finally, mild tranquilizers such as Buspar are sometimes used to control or relieve anxiety attacks. While headaches, drowsiness or dizziness may occur, side effects are typically mild with this type of anxiety attack medication.
